The 3 day workshop will concentrate on the salient topics relating to painting the portrait in oils. Each day will start with Jacob doing a lecture/demonstration pertaining to relevant topics and skills in the various stages of a portrait painting. During the course the participants will have the option to paint multiple portrait paintings from a photo reference giving them an opportunity to work through the principles covered in the workshop to give a greater understanding.
Main topics covered during the workshop; -composition -accurate drawing (proportions) -value control (benefits of the 5 value system) -edge control -cool light vs warm light -importance of proper temperature shifts -using value and color to show depth -color theory -simplifying shadow shapes. -the use of various tools and techniques to achieve expressive -Creating a sense of motion -The use of line within a painting -wet into wet painting vs.wet on dry painting Extras that come with the class
-after each zoom class there will one extra hi resolution recording during the week of some of the finishing processes on the portrait painting demonstrations and/or extra videos relating to portrait painting. -videos will be available for six months Two class critiques will be available. -One will be through email during the first two weeks -The second critique will be a video critique done through Zoom or Whats App(or email if it is requested) (note! all critiques must be scheduled or submitted before October 31st) Itinerary for online class
Day 1: Introduction to the portrait workshop
Expressive portrait demonstrations. Concepts to be covered include accurate placement, sight sizing for proportions, massing in the forms, value choices, composition, color design, and different paint consistency for the different stages. -Optional homework: start expressive portrait Day 2: Cool light demonstration Day 3 Warm light demonstrtation -Class length is 3 to 3.5 hours per season. -Each session will be recorded and available for 6 months to view at your leisure |
